On 12 April 2026, presidential candidates Paloma Valencia and Abelardo de la Espriella have received death threats in recent days, following the circulation of digital images and an attack on their campaign headquarters in the city of Bucaramanga. Both candidates belong to the political opposition and their party colleagues have expressed their concern.
The Ombudsman’s Office condemned these incidents and called for effective protection to be provided to candidates and for them to be able to carry out their activities during the presidential campaign. Similarly, the ruling party’s candidate condemned these events. The Home Secretary also reported that since last year, measures to protect candidates have been stepped up, following the murder of Miguel Uribe Turbay.
