On 24 September 2026, Gabriel Pacheco Díaz, a human rights defender and community leader from Villagarzón in the department of Putumayo, was murdered. His body was found on the road between the hamlets of La Palanca and Santa Rosa, showing signs of violence. Gabriel Pacheco was chairman of the Community Action Board of the hamlet of Naranjito, head of the Technical Secretariat for Human Rights at Asojuntas in Villagarzón, and a member of the Human Rights Network of Putumayo, Piamonte and Sucumbíos.
The Human Rights Network condemned the murder and demanded that an investigation be carried out to establish both the perpetrators and those who ordered the killing. To date, there have been no publicly reported arrests in connection with this case, nor any official theory regarding the motives for the murder. The circumstances of the crime, those responsible and the possible motives are the subject of the investigation.
Indepaz has recorded social leader and human rights defender Gabriel Pacheco as the 115th person murdered in Colombia in 2026. This murder takes place against a backdrop of environmental tension within the department for social leaders and environmental defenders. Foro Región Central warned that, Jonathan Meneses, a human rights defender from the department of Putumayo, reported receiving threats after filing, on behalf of the Fundación Tiempo de Cambios, a constitutional petition that succeeded in provisionally suspending the pilot project for aerial spraying with glufosinate ammonium.

El 24 de septiembre de 2026, Gabriel Pacheco Díaz, defensor de los derechos humanos y líder comunitario de Villagarzón, en el departamento de Putumayo, fue asesinado. Su cadáver fue hallado en la carretera entre las aldeas de La Palanca y Santa Rosa, con signos de violencia. Gabriel Pacheco era presidente de la Junta de Acción Comunitaria de la aldea de Naranjito, responsable de la Secretaría Técnica de Derechos Humanos de Asojuntas en Villagarzón y miembro de la Red de Derechos Humanos de Putumayo, Piamonte y Sucumbíos.
La Red de Derechos Humanos condenó el asesinato y exigió que se llevara a cabo una investigación para identificar tanto a los autores como a quienes ordenaron el asesinato. Hasta la fecha, no se ha informado públicamente de ninguna detención relacionada con este caso, ni existe ninguna hipótesis oficial sobre los motivos del asesinato. Las circunstancias del delito, los responsables y los posibles motivos son objeto de la investigación.
Indepaz ha registrado al líder social y defensor de los derechos humanos Gabriel Pacheco como la persona número 115 asesinada en Colombia en 2026. Este asesinato se produce en un contexto de tensión medioambiental en el departamento para los líderes sociales y los defensores del medio ambiente. El Foro Región Central advirtió que, Jonathan Meneses, defensor de los derechos humanos del departamento de Putumayo, denunció haber recibido amenazas tras presentar, en nombre de la Fundación Tiempo de Cambios, un recurso de inconstitucionalidad que logró suspender provisionalmente el proyecto piloto de fumigación aérea con glufosinato de amonio.
