Libreville: Arrest of activist Bob Mengone

Event Summary

On 15 January 2026, activist Bob Mengone, known by the pseudonym “Matricule 212”, was abducted from his home by unidentified individuals, according to reports by the online newspaper Magazine Super Star. The assailants allegedly broke into his home, handcuffed him and forcibly took him away while his family looked on helplessly. Two days later, he was remanded in custody at Libreville Central Prison, where his health is said to have deteriorated. He is being prosecuted for disturbing public order, defamation and incitement to hatred. These charges follow the dissemination of videos on social media criticising the current management of the country.

These events reveal a trend towards authoritarianism in Gabon, where arbitrary arrests and the disappearance of a well-known activist reflect a strategy of control aimed at reducing civic space by restricting freedom of expression and opinion. The opacity of the authorities, manifested by the absence of official justification, acts as a deterrent and a means of intimidation, reinforcing fear and mistrust within civil society.
