On 26 September 2026, Kéita Daouda, an English teacher at the Lycée moderne de Bédiala, died on the Bédiala road, on the Daloa–Bédiala route, in Côte d’Ivoire. According to the Collective of Education and Training Sector Trade Unions of Haut-Sassandra, he was returning from Daloa on a motorbike, wearing a helmet and in full compliance with the law, when a rope being used as a roadblock was suddenly pulled up after a lorry had passed. The rope is said to have struck him violently, killing him instantly. Alerted to the incident, teachers went to the scene. The Mobile Intervention Unit (GMI) is reported to have then used tear gas, pursued and beaten the teachers, including in a low-lying area. Around ten teachers were injured, four of whom were hospitalised. Mobile phones were snatched and damaged.
The trade union coalition has declared three days of regional mourning, from Monday 28 to Wednesday 30 September 2026, with the suspension of lessons and all teaching and administrative activities in primary and secondary schools across the region. A march to the Daloa prefecture took place on 28 September to read out a motion of protest, and a memorial vigil was planned for 29 September at the scene of the tragedy. The trade unions are demanding an independent inquiry, the abolition of the ‘corridor’ system, a ban on the use of ropes as barricades, and financial support for the deceased’s children.
