Armand Krikpeu: Two years in prison for a peaceful march, Côte d’Ivoire’s civic space in limbo

Français English English Français English Français

Armand Krikpeu, Secretary-General of the Agir pour le peuple (AGIP) platform, was arrested on 13 September 2024 in Abidjan while organizing a peaceful march against the rising cost of living. He was held incommunicado for three days and was subsequently charged with incitement to insurrection, disturbing public order, organizing a prohibited demonstration, and unlawful assembly.

In July 2025, the anti-terrorism division of the Abidjan Criminal Court sentenced him to 24 months in prison and 10 years’ deprivation of his civil rights for disturbing public order and organizing a prohibited demonstration.

According to reliable sources, after two years in detention at the Abidjan Penitentiary Centre, he was released on 16 September 2026, where he was welcomed by relatives and supporters, with his fist raised.

His release brings to an end a detention regarded as arbitrary by numerous human rights organizations, but it does not remedy the violations he suffered: incommunicado detention, denial of access to a lawyer, the criminalization of peaceful activism, and prolonged deprivation of his civil rights.

The case illustrates the continuing pressure on Côte d’Ivoire’s civic space and the difficulties faced by human rights defenders in exercising their freedoms.
