On 14 August 2026, the National Network of Independent Journalists (RENAJI) announced the release of journalist Médard Tounda Younbi. Mr Tounda Youbi, a journalist with the online media outlet Youbi Info Médias and a member of the National Network of Independent Journalists (RENAJI), had been imprisoned on 23 April 2026 at Libreville Central Prison (Gros Bouquet). His arrest followed a complaint lodged by the Gabonese Minister for Trade, Zenaba Gninga Chanhing, on initial charges of defamation, blackmail and extortion, which were reclassified as ‘physical threats’ during the legal proceedings.
The dispute stemmed from a previous collaboration between the journalist and the Minister, for whom he had served as campaign manager during the presidential election of 12 April 2025, prior to the Minister’s appointment to the current government. Following the election, their relationship had deteriorated, leading to legal proceedings and the journalist’s imprisonment. The release of Médard Tounda Youbi marks a victory in civil society’s fight against violations of fundamental rights and the use of the judicial system by certain figures holding state authority to neutralise their opponents.

Le 14 août 2026, le Réseau national des journalistes indépendants (RENAJI) a annoncé la libération du journaliste Médard Tounda Younbi. M. Tounda Younbi, journaliste au sein du média en ligne Youbi Info Médias et membre du Réseau national des journalistes indépendants (RENAJI), avait été incarcéré le 23 avril 2026 à la prison centrale de Libreville (Gros Bouquet). Son arrestation faisait suite à une plainte déposée par la ministre gabonaise du Commerce, Zenaba Gninga Chanhing, pour des chefs d’accusation initiaux de diffamation, de chantage et d’extorsion, qui ont été requalifiés en « menaces physiques » au cours de la procédure judiciaire.
Ce différend trouvait son origine dans une collaboration antérieure entre le journaliste et le ministre, dont il avait été le directeur de campagne lors de l’élection présidentielle du 12 avril 2025, avant la nomination de ce dernier au sein du gouvernement actuel. À l’issue de l’élection, leurs relations s’étaient détériorées, ce qui avait conduit à une procédure judiciaire et à l’incarcération du journaliste. La libération de Médard Tounda Youbi marque une victoire dans la lutte menée par la société civile contre les violations des droits fondamentaux et l’utilisation du système judiciaire par certaines personnalités détenant l’autorité de l’État pour neutraliser leurs adversaires.
