Following the earthquakes of 24 June, users, media outlets, and civil society organizations reported that access to the social media platform X had been restored after it had been blocked by order of then-President Nicolás Maduro nearly two years ago. However, no official explanation has been provided for the decision to lift the restriction.
The restoration of access came amid growing pressure on social media and from the international community, where calls were made for the government to ensure unrestricted access to social media platforms and independent media in order to facilitate the disaster response. As of April this year, censorship and restrictions on access to information had affected not only X, but also more than 200 websites, including those of at least 65 media outlets.
Both the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights and the Independent International Fact-Finding Mission on Venezuela publicly called for unrestricted access to information and the lifting of these digital blocks. Free access to information is essential during a humanitarian emergency, as it facilitates the search for and rescue of victims, ultimately helping to save lives.
In addition to the restoration of access to X, several media outlets also reported the partial lifting of restrictions affecting their digital news platforms.
However, on 29 June, unverified reports began circulating on social media indicating that access to X was once again being blocked by several internet service providers in the country. If confirmed, this would represent a significant setback and an unjustified restriction on the right to freedom of information.

Esta apertura fue seguida de la presión dada en redes sociales y a nivel internacional, donde se hicieron llamados a permitir el acceso libre a redes sociales y medios de comunicación, para la atención del desastre. Hasta abril de este año, la censura y restricción de la información no solo han afectado a la red social X, sino también a más de 200 sitios web, incluidos los de al menos 65 medios de comunicación.
Tanto el Alto Comisionado de Naciones Unidas para los Derechos Humanos, como la Misión internacional Independiente de Determinación de los Hechos sobre Venezuela, hicieron llamados públicos a permitir el acceso libre a la información y el levantamiento de estos bloqueos digitales. El acceso libre a la información resulta vital para la atención de una emergencia humanitaria y además, facilita el rescate y rastreo de víctimas, lo que permite salvar más vidas.
Además del levantamiento del bloqueo a la red X, algunos medios de comunicación reportaron levantamientos parciales a bloqueos en sus portales digitales.
Ahora bien, este 29 de junio en redes sociales han surgido reportes no verificados aún de que el acceso a X estaría siendo bloqueado nuevamente por parte de varios proveedores de internet en el país, por lo que representaría un retroceso y una restricción injustificada en el derecho a la libre información.
