Extension of the suspension of social media platforms despite the new regulatory order

On 26 February 2026, an order concerning the regulation of social media was issued by the Head of State and subsequently published in the Official Gazette on 8 April 2026. However, despite this order, the suspension of these digital platforms remains in place, much to the astonishment of the public.

Some Gabonese media outlets have highlighted the inconsistency between the authorities’ statements regarding a gradual return of social media and the fact that the suspension is still in force. This reinforces the public perception that the authorities are seeking to exercise absolute control over social media. This situation is also fuelling debate within civil society regarding the balance to be struck between respect for fundamental freedoms and the regulation of digital freedoms.
