Ecuador Enabling Environment Snapshot

Between January and March 2026, Ecuador has seen a growing number of alerts indicating increasing erosion of freedom of expression and a rise in the national government’s intolerance of criticism in the public sphere. This has manifested in ways such as the intervention against a media company that publishes outlets critical of the government, and a measure decreed by the Armed Forces to restrict press accreditation based on journalists’ stance towards the institution. Combined with a restrictive regulatory framework against civil society and the ongoing use of presidential emergency powers, this continues to constitute a case of democratic backsliding.
