Event Summary
On 17 August 2025, hundreds of thousands of Israelis participated in a nationwide civil strike and mass protests organized by the Hostages and Missing Families Forum and the October Council. These CSOs, representing families of hostages and victims of the war, called for the immediate return of 50 hostages (living and deceased) held in Gaza for more than 688 days, since October 7, 2023, and an end to the war.
Demonstrations began early morning hours at hundreds of intersections. It continued throughout the day with marches and events in various towns, and culminated in a massive rally in Tel Aviv in the evening. The initiative gained widespread support from businesses, civic organizations, academic institutions, and local authorities, many of which suspended operations to allow participation.
Civil society actors viewed the strike as a powerful expression of public solidarity and civic mobilization. The event reflects a growing public demand for a negotiated solution that returns the hostages and ends the war, with polls showing 70–80% support for such an option. The protesters expressed their empathy, support, and solidarity with the families of the hostages, chanting “You are not alone. We are with you,” a call that was voiced by many throughout the day. The events described demonstrate and illustrate the resilience of civic space and the potential for broad-based mobilization, even in times of crisis and conflict. However, the state’s response and long-term impact on civil society engagement remain to be seen.
