Journalists attacked while investigating a worksite run by a state-contracted company

On 21 February 2025, journalists from MCRTV-NF were verbally and physically assaulted by security agents from the company China State Construction Engineering Corporation Congo (CSCEC) while reporting in Pointe-Noire’s Siafoumou neighbourhood. The team was investigating whether construction on a drainage project had ceased, following a suspension order by the Minister of the Environment. Despite the order, the company – that is executing a public contract – continued its work and attempted to block the journalists from filming, citing unauthorised access. This attack not only obstructed press freedom but also violated freedom of information.

The case was reported to the High Council for Freedom of Information and Communication (CLSC), the media regulatory body, which in such circumstances conducts the necessary due diligence as a media protection institution. To date, there has been no feedback from the CLSC nor other government authorities to protect the journalists or uphold press freedom, leaving MCRTV-NF concerned for the safety and integrity of its staff as they continue exposing the situation.
