As reported by EU SEE network members from across the globe in June, the month saw the record for the most improvement alerts in one month so far. Positive developments included the acquittal of 11 environmental defenders in Peru, and youth-led anti-corruption protests leading to a new government in Mongolia.

On the other hand, there were also legal proposals that potentially threaten press freedom put forward in Peru, as well as force used against protestors at the National University of Huancavelica, resulting in multiple injuries.
In terms of emerging contexts to watch, June saw growing polarisation ahead of the primary elections in Chile, while there were severe restrictions placed on the monitoring and participation in elections in Burundi, a clear sign of a deterioration in the Burundian enabling environment for civil society.
Further deteriorations were found in Somalia, where a mass arrest of journalists took place in Mogadishu, and in Myanmar, where Radio Free Asia was forced to suspend its Burmese language staff as a result of the cuts to USAID, the global repercussions of which covered extensively in our USAID funding freeze impact survey.
