During the period covered by the report (September 2025 – June 2026), the situation for civil society in Algeria continued to deteriorate. Algeria remains classified as ‘not free’ by Freedom House (31/100) and ‘repressed’ by the CIVICUS Monitor. This period was marked by an intensification of the criminalisation of critical speech — with academics, journalists, trade unionists and lawyers prosecuted under anti-terrorism legislation; by the closure of emblematic organisations (the headquarters of SOS Disparus was sealed off); by a constitutional amendment reinforcing the regime’s presidentialisation; and by the entry into force of the law on the revocation of nationality, implemented by decree in June 2026. In the run-up to the parliamentary elections on 2 July 2026, the mass rejection of candidacies fuelled mistrust. Today, only a residual independent civil society remains. Reduced to a minority, the activists still active nevertheless continue the struggle in their own way, at the cost of increasing risks, drawing on international and regional solidarity.
