Since 22 April 2025, students from the Faculty of Education Sciences at the National University of Huancavelica have been staging demonstrations and sit-ins to demand the resumption of construction on their new campus infrastructure. The public works project has been stalled for over a year due to issues identified in the soil studies.
On 5 May 2025, during one of the protests, clashes erupted when officers from the National Police’s Special Services Division intervened to disperse the demonstrators. The police employed tear gas, batons, and rubber bullets, resulting in multiple students injured and several individuals detained.
The following day, as authorities and students attempted to establish a dialogue table, police arrested one of the student leaders, accusing him of allegedly stealing a police officer’s cellphone during the security cordon. This detention, occurring at a critical moment in the negotiations, led to the suspension of dialogue until the leader’s release the next day.
The university issued an official statement condemning the use of violence during the protests, while students denounced acts of repression. Subsequently, on May 8, during a resumed dialogue session, an agreement was reached for the students to end their occupation of the university campus.
