On 22 September 2026, the United States of America’s Ambassador Pamela Tremont announced that U.S. supported health programmes in Zimbabwe will conclude at the end of September after the Government of Zimbabwe declined a proposed bilateral health memorandum of understanding. The announcement turns the previously reported funding wind-down into an immediate operational deadline. Tremont said the Embassy, Ministry of Health and Child Care and other partners were working on a responsible handover, but no programme-by-programme transition plan was published.
The Zimbabwe National Network of People Living with HIV had earlier called for a clear contingency plan and meaningful involvement of affected communities, while recognising the government’s responsibility to protect national sovereignty. The closeout may affect CSOs, community health workers and referral systems supported through U.S. health funding, particularly HIV, tuberculosis, malaria and related community services. Exact awards, staffing arrangements and services continuing through other financing remain unconfirmed.
