Threats and violence against journalists in Ica and Áncash regions

Español English Español English English Español

During September 2026, Peru recorded new incidents of violence and threats against journalists.

On the night of 17 September, journalist and director of the digital outlet La Lupa, Kenny Yucra, was threatened with death in the Ica region, a coastal region in southern Peru. The threat came from an unknown number via WhatsApp and consisted of two videos showing a firearm and simulating the act of shooting him. In parallel, a legal complaint had been filed against Yucra by a regional candidate. La Lupa is known for investigating cases of corruption and human rights violations involving public authorities or candidates.

On 22 September, in the province of Nasca, also in the Ica region, journalists Adrián Sarria and photographer César Zamalloa, from the weekly newspaper Hildebrandt en sus trece, were intimidated by gunshots fired by private security guards wearing insignia allegedly identifying them as personnel of an agribusiness company, near the Chauchilla cemetery. The journalists were conducting an investigation together with the archaeological site’s caretaker into the damage caused by illegal mining in the protected area of the Nasca Lines, where a ranch belonging to the aforementioned agribusiness company also operates. The security guards refused to identify themselves when police officers arrived at the site to document the incident.

September also saw the murder of Susy Isabel Aponte Polo, a journalist and candidate for the regional government of Áncash, during a campaign event. Although the motives for her murder remain unclear, it is alleged that the case involved a contract killing. If it is established that the murder was related to her journalistic work, it would constitute one of the most serious acts of violence against journalists recorded so far this year.

The Instituto Prensa y Sociedad (IPYS) reported all these cases as alerts involving violations of press freedom. Likewise, the Asociación Nacional de Periodistas del Perú (ANP) published them among its news reports. According to statements by Yucra to La República, these two organizations, together with the Red de Medios Regionales del Perú, have supported him in the process of seeking access to justice.
