On Wednesday, 3 June 2026, the Chilean Student Confederation (Confech) organized a national march in downtown Santiago and other cities across the country to protest the José Antonio Kast administration’s sweeping education reform, the “Protected Schools” initiative, and budget cuts to education.
The demonstration, which drew approximately 4,500 people in the capital, marched along the Alameda from Plaza Baquedano but was intercepted by the Carabineros near the Catholic University using water cannons and tear gas. The official toll was 35 arrests, three injured civilians, and three Carabineros with minor injuries.
The most serious incident involved the arrest and severe injuries sustained by a law student from the University of Chile, who underwent surgery at the former Posta Central hospital for multiple facial fractures.
The Confech denounced “disproportionate repression” by the Carabineros, while the presidential delegate Germán Codina claimed that the student had been struck by a rock thrown by other protesters and that she “was part of the riots.”

El miércoles 3 de junio de 2026, la Confederación de Estudiantes de Chile (CONFECH) organizó una marcha nacional en el centro de Santiago y otras ciudades del país para protestar contra la amplia reforma educativa del gobierno de José Antonio Kast, la iniciativa “Escuelas Protegidas” y los recortes presupuestarios en educación.
La manifestación, que reunió a aproximadamente 4.500 personas en la capital, avanzó por la Alameda desde Plaza Baquedano, pero fue interceptada por Carabineros cerca de la Universidad Católica mediante el uso de carros lanzaagua y gases lacrimógenos. El balance oficial fue de 35 personas detenidas, tres civiles heridos y tres carabineros con lesiones leves.
El incidente más grave involucró la detención y las graves lesiones sufridas por una estudiante de Derecho de la Universidad de Chile, quien fue sometida a una cirugía en el ex Posta Central debido a múltiples fracturas faciales.
La CONFECH denunció una “represión desproporcionada” por parte de Carabineros, mientras que el delegado presidencial Germán Codina afirmó que la estudiante habría sido golpeada por una piedra lanzada por otros manifestantes y que “formaba parte de los disturbios”.
