Journalist Hamid Mahmoud, editor-in-chief of the private radio station Sahara FM in Agadez, was released on Friday, 16 July 2026, the day after the release of journalists Oumarou Kané and Youssouf Seriba. He had been held under a detention order since 13 June 2025 at Kollo Civil Prison and was initially prosecuted on charges of “undermining national defence” and “conspiracy against state authority.” After several months of investigations, he was ultimately charged with a press-related offence.
Hamid Mahmoud was first arrested on 7 May 2025 alongside his fellow journalists Mahaman Sani and Mas’ouda Jaharou Sanda. They were released on 9 May by a judge in Agadez, but were arrested again the following day, 10 May 2025, by the gendarmerie after reporting information from the LSI Africa website concerning an alleged terrorist attack against a National Guard post.
The three journalists were transferred to Niamey on 14 May 2025 and brought before the military court on 13 June 2025. While Massaouda Jaharou was granted provisional release and Mahaman Sani was released in August, Hamid Mahmoud remained in detention.

Le journaliste Hamid Mahmoud, rédacteur en chef de la radio privée Sahara FM d’Agadez, a été libéré le vendredi 16 juillet 2026 soit le lendemain de libération des journalistes Oumarou Kané et Youssouf Seriba. Ce dernier était placé sous mandat de dépôt le 13 juin 2025 à la prison civile de Kollo, il était poursuivi pour des accusations d’« atteinte à la défense nationale » et de « complot contre l’autorité de l’État ». Après plusieurs mois d’investigations, c’est finalement le délit de presse qui a été retenu contre lui.
Hamid Mahmoud avait été interpellé une première fois le 7 mai 2025 avec ses confrères Mahaman Sani et Mas’ouda Jaharou Sanda, avant d’être relâchés le 9 mai par un juge d’Agadez, puis de nouveau arrêtés le lendemain, 10 mai 2025 par la gendarmerie, après avoir relayé une information du site LSI Africa concernant une attaque terroriste présumée contre un poste de la Garde Nationale. Transférés à Niamey le 14 mai 2025, les trois journalistes avaient été présentés au tribunal militaire le 13 juin 2025. Si Massaouda Jaharou avait bénéficié d’une libération provisoire et Mahaman Sani d’une libération en août, Hamid Mahmoud était resté incarcéré.
