Event Summary
In 2025, mobilizations led by Generation Z emerged in Nepal, characterized by digitally driven organization and the use of popular cultural symbols. The protest began after the government restricted access to digital platforms. This discontent escalated quickly and, amid demonstrations and repression, the movement succeeded in pressuring the prime minister to resign and restoring access to the digital platforms.
This movement became global, and Mexico was no exception. Toward the end of October, calls attributed to “Generation Z” began circulating on social media, urging nationwide demonstrations on November 15, using the same iconography popularized in Nepal. However, some sectors—such as government supporters—pointed to signs of possible political instrumentalization by opposition parties. Meanwhile, other Generation Z collectives expressed distrust toward the November 15 call to protest, arguing that the movement was being guided by anti-rights and conservative groups.
For its part, the federal government, during the morning press conference, displayed the accounts of those calling for the November 15 march and their alleged ties to the opposition. The main concern was the public exposure of these individuals’ personal data.
At the end of the November 15 march in Mexico City, clashes were reported that left roughly one hundred people injured by the police, as well as 20 participants detained. The city government has opened investigation files due to the possible use of excessive force.
This event represents a situation that requires close monitoring due to the associated sociopolitical risks. Youth movements with legitimate demands can be co-opted by different political factions and anti-rights groups, leading to greater polarization and institutional tension. There is also an ongoing risk of disinformation, including AI-generated videos of “parents demanding justice” for detentions that never occurred. This has also been reflected internationally, where Donald Trump’s government has claimed that such events constitute grounds for intervention in the country.
