Prime Minister of Jamaica blasts CSOs inter alia as “Funded Political Activist.”

On 27 May 2026, Prime Minister Andrew Holness publicly criticized some individuals and organizations advocating for additional oversight and accountability mechanisms in relation to the National Reconstruction and Resilience Authority (NaRRA). Speaking at a post-Cabinet press conference, the Prime Minister stated that some critics of the legislation were ‘politically motivated’, and did not genuinely represent civil society and received funding to oppose government initiatives.

The comments were made in response to concerns raised by opposition representatives, governance advocates and numerous civil society organizations regarding the scope of powers granted under the NaRRA legislation and the adequacy of oversight mechanisms. The Prime Minister argued that existing accountability frameworks already provide sufficient safeguards and suggested that some critics were motivated by political interests rather than genuine governance concerns.

While no specific organization or individual was identified, the comments raise concerns regarding public discourse surrounding civil society participation and the role of independent advocacy organizations in democratic governance. Statements by senior public officials that question the legitimacy, motives, or independence of civil society actors may contribute to an environment in which public-interest advocacy and accountability work are viewed with suspicion, potentially undermining meaningful civic participation and public engagement.
