On 21 July 2026, marking the anniversary of the Yuen Long mob attack (the “721 incident”) in 2019, police deployed a pre-emptive presence to deter public commemoration. At Yuen Long Station at least 10 suspected plainclothes officers were stationed with multiple additional officers monitoring the underpass leading to the Light Rail station. This pre-emptive police deployment echoes previous observations on sensitive dates, such as 4 June, demonstrating a structural pattern where law enforcement proactively moves to prevent peaceful individual expression and assembly.
Despite this intimidating atmosphere, individuals courageously staged peaceful, solitary or two-person protests at the site to preserve historical memory. Officers routinely stopped and searched these peaceful commemorators, recorded their personal details, and physically obstructed their movement. While no formal arrests were made on site that day, this pre-emptive harassment serves to intimidate citizens and suppress public discourse.
