On 12 August 2026, the investigating judge at the Sidi M’Hamed Court in Algiers ordered the remand in custody of Mohamed Bakir Turki, known as ‘Sofiane’, at Koléa Prison. The activist had been arrested at his place of work on 9 August 2026 and held in police custody prior to his appearance in court. He is being prosecuted, amongst other things, for “glorifying terrorism” and for using information and communication technologies to support or disseminate the ideas of a terrorist organisation, as well as for spreading false information likely to undermine public order, harm the national interest, show contempt for the authorities and incite a boycott of the elections. The charges are reportedly based, in particular, on his participation in a TikTok live stream broadcast on 5 June 2026.
Mohamed Bakir Turki is particularly well known for having coined the phrase ‘Yetnahaw Gaâ’ in 2019, which has become one of the iconic slogans of the Hirak. This case raises concerns about the use of anti-terrorism provisions and public order offences against political statements posted on social media, with a potential chilling effect on freedom of expression and civic participation in Algeria.

Le 12 août 2026, le juge d’instruction du tribunal de Sidi M’Hamed à Alger a ordonné le placement en détention provisoire de Mohamed Bakir Turki, dit « Sofiane », à la prison de Koléa. Le militant avait été arrêté sur son lieu de travail le 9 août 2026 et placé en garde à vue avant sa comparution devant le tribunal. Il est poursuivi, entre autres, pour « apologie du terrorisme » et pour avoir utilisé les technologies de l’information et de la communication afin de soutenir ou de diffuser les idées d’une organisation terroriste, ainsi que pour avoir diffusé de fausses informations susceptibles de porter atteinte à l’ordre public, de nuire à l’intérêt national, de manifester un mépris envers les autorités et d’inciter au boycott des élections. Ces chefs d’accusation reposeraient notamment sur sa participation à un direct diffusé sur TikTok le 5 juin 2026.
Mohamed Bakir Turki est notamment connu pour avoir inventé en 2019 l’expression « Yetnahaw Gaâ », devenue l’un des slogans emblématiques du Hirak.
