Between 16 March and 3 April 2026, the Myanmar military junta executed a highly orchestrated leadership transition to cement its political control, culminating in junta leader Min Aung Hlaing assuming the presidency. The process began with the convening of the sham parliament in Naypyidaw, where military loyalists were appointed to lead the legislative chambers. On 16 March 2026, the Lower House elected Union Solidarity and Development Party (USDP) Chair Khin Yi—who previously orchestrated pro-military rallies and crackdowns—as Speaker. On 18 March 2026, the Upper House appointed General Aung Lin Dwe as Speaker.
To facilitate his political ascension, Min Aung Hlaing relinquished his position as Commander-in-Chief on 30 March 2026, transferring the post to his intelligence chief, General Ye Win Oo, while General Kyaw Swar Lin succeeded the retiring Soe Win as Vice Commander-in-Chief. Following the selection of vice-presidential nominees from the military-stacked chambers (Min Aung Hlaing, Nang Ni Ni Aye, and Nyo Saw), Min Aung Hlaing officially secured the most votes in the Union Parliament on 3 April 2026 to become president. This move finalizes the junta’s strategy to legitimize its authoritarian rule under a pseudo-civilian facade.
