Jordanian journalist Mohammad Faraj detained without charge for 21 days, released

Event Summary

On 12 December  2025, journalist Mohammad Faraj was detained when arriving in Jordan through Queen Alia International Airport . Faraj is a Jordanian national based in Lebanon, and came back to Jordan with his wife to visit family. No justification or information on his charges were provided by authorities during his detention. He was released and returned to Lebanon after 21 days on 31 December 2025.

Faraj’s release came after pressure critiquing his detention and calling for his release by civil society and media groups at the domestic, regional, and international levels. Domestic groups included the Jordanian Democratic Popular Unity Party (Wihda), the Democratic Popular Unity Party, the Jordanian Communist Party, the Jordanian Writers Association. Regional and international groups included the Arab National Congress, the General Federation of Arab Journalists, Committee to Protect Journalists, Samidoun Network for the Defense of Prisoners, and International Union for Electronic Press and Media. Faraj’s employer, Al Mayadeen, also continually reported on Faraj’s detention.
