Defunding of the Argentine scientific system impacts CSO’s access to information

Event Summary

The Commission on Science, Technology and Innovation of the Chamber of Deputies  warned on 18 July 2025  about “the impact of the decrees that modify the structure and operation of key organizations such as the R+D+i Agency, INTI and INTA, as well as the crisis caused by the defunding and attack on science by the Government.” Since December 2023, the Argentine government has implemented a series of adjustment measures that seriously affect the national scientific and technological system. These policies include the paralysis of admission to scientific careers, mass layoffs, the virtual elimination of the Ministry of Science and Technology, and a drastic cut in the budgets allocated to research. The situation has been  denounced  by multiple academic, scientific and social sectors, including through a  joint statement of the Academic Committees of the Research Institutes of the Faculty of Social Sciences of the University of Buenos Aires .

For CSOs, this situation is particularly serious because it reduces their reliable sources of information and weakens their links with interdisciplinary research teams that have historically accompanied processes of systematization, evaluation and advocacy. This limits the possibility of generating accurate diagnoses of rights violations, as well as the development of evidence-based public policy proposals. The reduction in funding thus not only compromises the future of scientific knowledge in general, but also particularly affects the production of knowledge linked to the social sciences, which are fundamental for civil society organizations. The loss of this investigative capacity limits the possibility of having an informed impact on reality and means that CSOs face greater difficulties in justifying their actions to donors or the State, as they do not have locally produced evidence. The disconnect between CSOs and the scientific system also weakens democratic culture, as access to plural, validated and situated information is hindered.
