Civil society actors appointed in Reconciliation Process Taskforce

Français English English Français English Français

In April 2025, the Timor-Leste Government, through the Centro Nacional Chega Instituto Publiku (CNC), appointed various civil society actors—including NGOs, resistance groups from the Indonesian occupation era, veterans, and foundations operating in Timor-Leste—as members of the taskforce group known as the “Timorese Reconciliation Process” (PRT). This group was formed to assist the CNC in organizing and facilitating reconciliation efforts for those involved in political conflicts from 1974 to 1999.

Notable civil society actors invited to join the taskforce include the HAK Foundation, RENETIL, ACBIT, and others. On 4 April 2025, the taskforce held a reconciliation dialogue in Liquica Municipality, bringing together victims of the Liquica massacre and some of its perpetrators. This indicates an improvement in collaborations between government and civil society.

This event is a pattern that has been held by the CNC for the political conflict that occurred in the Maulau village in the Ainaro Municipality where some communities became victims because their family was killed by a perpetrator from different political parties on August 7, 1974 before the coup in East Timor. Through reconciliation activities, CNC managed to reconcile the families of the victims and the perpetrator who had a bad relationship for 40 years.
