Event Summary
On 22 November 2025, the Amalgamated Rural Teachers Union of Zimbabwe (ARTUZ) organised a private sports day event in Gweru aimed at promoting socialisation and mental well-being among its members. Under the theme “Teachers unwinding and recharging through sports,” the event was intended to facilitate discussions on professional development and address the mental health challenges faced by teachers. However, the gathering was abruptly disrupted by the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) anti-riot unit, effectively dispersing attendees before the opening remarks could be completed.
Amid the chaos, Emmanuel Mauya, the ARTUZ Manicaland Provincial Chairperson, was taken into police custody at Gweru Central Police Station. The police were also reportedly searching for ARTUZ President, Obert Masaraure. This intervention has raised serious concerns about the freedom of assembly and the treatment of trade unions in Zimbabwe, as it reflects a broader pattern of state repression against civic engagement and independent voices. Section 58 and 59 of the Constitution of Zimbabwe, as well as in Article 20 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) and Article 10 of the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights providing for the freedom of assembly have been violated.
