Chilean Government’s decision not to hold an official ceremony commemorating the 53rd anniversary of the 1973 coup d’état.

Español English Español English English Español

On 11 September 2026, for the first time since Chile’s return to democracy in 1990, the national government did not hold an official ceremony to commemorate the anniversary of the 1973 coup d’état that overthrew President Salvador Allende and initiated Augusto Pinochet’s dictatorship (1973–1990). President José Antonio Kast maintained his regular work agenda and traveled to the Los Ríos Region in southern Chile, while La Moneda (the presidential palace was bombed by the armed forces on September 11, 1973. President Salvador Allende died inside.) did not schedule any official institutional activity to mark the date.

The government justified the decision by stating that 11 September is a day on which “all Chileans approach with different types of sensitivities and feelings,” and that the administration is “respectful of those approaches.” Minister Claudio Alvarado, spokesperson for the Interior and Government Secretariat, said the government is “working day by day on people’s priorities”.

The decision not to hold an official ceremony occurs in a context of concern from human rights organizations about potential pardons for individuals convicted of crimes against humanity, delays in the National Search Plan for disappeared persons, and the closure of the UBAFI unit investigating cases of babies stolen during the dictatorship.

Meanwhile, human rights organizations, memory sites, opposition political parties, and victims’ families carried out commemorative activities throughout the country, including a central ceremony at the General Cemetery in Santiago led by the Salvador Allende Foundation. Organizations emphasized that “the State has no right to forget” and called for truth, justice, memory, and guarantees of non-repetition.
