Centralisation and cuts at Radio Nacional reduce pluralism of provincial voices and access to information

Event Summary

From 2024 and with greater intensity in 2025, unions and regional media denounce a reduction in the federal reach of Radio Nacional: salary freezes, budget and endowment cuts, and replacement of local content with centralized signals from Buenos Aires.

On 31 July 2025, Decree 525/2025 formalized the transformation of Radio y Televisión Argentina into a Sociedad Anónima Unipersonal (RTA S.A.U.) under intervention, which —according to workers— enables greater recentralization and eventual privatization. FATPREN and CiSPren warn of “information blackouts” in areas where public radio is the only reliable source and cite cases such as in Chubut, where cuts affected rural messaging.

On Radio Nacional Esquel, the withdrawal of local FM content and the suppression of provincial addresses are reported. The precedent of the closure and reconversion of Télam in 2024 under Decree 548/2024 reinforces the concern about a structural erosion of the public communication ecosystem in Argentina.

The reduction of regional content and the silencing of diverse voices weaken the democratic function of public media, especially in a country characterized by its territorial diversity. Civil society organizations, especially those working in subnational or rural contexts, lose space to disseminate their problems, campaigns, or initiatives. This diminishes their ability to influence the public agenda and deteriorates pluralism, an essential value in any democracy. It also affects equitable access to information and media representation in the communities furthest from the federal capital.
