Event Summary
A field survey carried out by the Confédération syndicale des forces productives (COSYFOP ) has revealed a total and systematic blocking of the online petition platforms Change.org and Avaaz.org throughout Algeria. More than 200 trade union members in various provinces have tried to access these sites via all available Internet service providers, without success. This blocking prevents citizens and organisations from launching or supporting online campaigns, severely limiting freedom of expression and the tools for peaceful mobilisation.
This action is a direct attack on fundamental digital rights, particularly in a context where trade union repression, arbitrary trials and the banning of peaceful demonstrations are already commonplace. Obstructing access to these platforms deprives Algerian civil society of a crucial space to make its voice heard both nationally and internationally. COSYFOP, which tried to launch a campaign on behalf of an arrested trade unionist, denounces this blockage as a form of political censorship.
