Arrest of volunteer doctor Hamid Al-Naeem on East Nile Emergency Response Room

On 31 March 2026, volunteer doctor Hamid Al-Naeem, a member of the East Nile Emergency Response Room in Al-Jereif East, was arrested by security forces and taken to a facility locally known as the “security cell.” This entity was established following the outbreak of war and includes members from various formal and informal security actors, including the National Intelligence Service, the Sudanese Armed Forces, and allied non-state forces.

Dr. Al-Naeem remains in arbitrary detention at the time of this report, without any formal charges brought against him and without clear legal procedures or guarantees of a fair trial. On 20 April 2026, he was transferred to Soba Prison without any charges being filed. Dr. Al-Naeem is known for his humanitarian and medical contributions to the local community, where he has consistently provided essential support to civilians under extremely difficult humanitarian conditions. Like other Emergency Response Room volunteers, he is not affiliated with any armed group or political activity, and his role is strictly limited to community-based humanitarian work.

His arrest reflects a broader pattern of targeting volunteers and humanitarian workers, particularly those involved in Emergency Response Rooms. On the same day of his arrest, several other volunteers from different areas in East Nile were also detained and interrogated regarding their affiliation with Emergency Response Rooms, as well as their sources of funding and financial channels used to support humanitarian activities.
