Arrest of 22-year-old for social media posts with alleged seditious intent

A 22-year-old man has been charged for allegedly posting inciting content on social media platforms X (formerly Twitter) and Instagram. These posts, made between June 2024 and April 2025, are said to have the intention of inciting hatred or contempt toward the Chinese government’s political system as defined by the Chinese Constitution. The man faces charges of knowingly publishing materials with seditious intent. Police have yet to complete their investigation. The defendant has been denied bail and remains in custody pending further hearings, with the next court date scheduled for 12 June 2025. The prosecution has indicated that additional charges may be filed as the investigation progresses.

This arrest is a consequence of the National Security Law implemented in 2020 and comes amid a broader crackdown on dissent in Hong Kong, where pro-democracy activism and free speech have increasingly faced scrutiny from both local and mainland authorities.
