Arbitrary detention of social activist Sadia Moalim Ali raises concerns over civic space and freedom of expression in Somalia

On 12 May 2026, a coalition of Somali women’s rights organizations, human rights defenders, and civil society groups issued a joint statement condemning the continued detention of Somali social activist Sadia Moalim Ali. The statement expressed concerns that the case reflects broader restrictions on freedom of expression, peaceful assembly, and civic participation. The organizations warned that the prolonged detention of an activist for peaceful civic engagement could have a chilling effect on public participation and civic activism in Somalia.

Ms. Ali, a tuktuk driver and social activist, was arrested in Mogadishu on 12 April 2026 by security personnel reportedly linked to the National Intelligence and Security Agency (NISA). According to Amnesty International, her detention is linked to her peaceful activism, including social media engagement and participation in non-violent protests. She remains in detention despite reports that no formal charges have been communicated to her family. Amnesty International has called for her immediate and unconditional release.
