On 13 September 2026, the journalist Kenny Claude Nduwimana was attacked near his home in the Buterere area of Bujumbura. According to reports, the attack took place as he was returning home with his wife after seeing off some visitors. According to eyewitnesses contacted by SOS Torture Burundi, three individuals identified as Rama, Yousouf and Thomas are reported to have struck the journalist with a plank, particularly on the head. Nduwimana is reported to have sustained an injury above his left eye and to have been taken to a healthcare facility to receive treatment.
According to the journalist and his relatives, those suspected of carrying out the attack are believed to have remained in the vicinity after the incident. At this stage, these details are based on accounts provided by the journalist and his relatives and may require further verification. The journalist had already been arrested on several occasions. In particular, he had been arrested in October 2023 and sentenced in August 2024 to eight months’ imprisonment, notably for “contempt of a public official” and “undermining the internal security of the State”. He also spent a period in pre-trial detention that exceeded the length of his sentence. Nduwimana was finally released on 4 March 2026, after being granted a presidential pardon. In a report published in June 2026, the United Nations described his release, along with that of the journalist Sandra Muhoza, as an encouraging, albeit limited, development regarding media freedom in Burundi.
This attack serves as a wake-up call regarding the safety of journalists and, more broadly, the environment in which freedom of expression and the right to information are exercised in Burundi.
