The Tunisian journalist Mohamed Yousfi was arrested on Friday 4 September 2026 whilst on his way to the Express FM studios in Tunis, where he was due to take part in a programme. He is the editor-in-chief of the investigative news outlet Alqatiba and is known for his criticism of the government. Following his arrest, the Economic and Financial Investigations Unit ordered that he be held in police custody as part of a judicial investigation. The charges announced by a judicial source relate in particular to illicit enrichment and money laundering, as well as other alleged financial offences.
According to the The National Union of Tunisian Journalists (SNJT), the investigators are also said to have questioned him about his journalistic work and Alqatiba’s editorial line. The union is calling for his release as well as for his rights and the presumption of innocence to be respected. The International Federation of Journalists has also called for his immediate release. One particularly worrying development, according to the SNJT, is that Yousfi should have undergone emergency surgery for appendicitis whilst in police custody. Mohamed Yousfi’s police custody was extended by a further 48 hours on 7 September 2026. The decision was taken by the investigating judge of the Economic and Financial Crimes Unit, following the expiry of the initial 48-hour period. The SNJT has condemned the continued detention of its member, despite his state of health, and is calling for his immediate release.

À la suite de son arrestation, la Direction des enquêtes économiques et financières a ordonné son placement en garde à vue dans le cadre d’une enquête judiciaire. Selon le Syndicat national des journalistes tunisiens (SNJT), les enquêteurs l’auraient également interrogé sur son travail journalistique et sur la ligne éditoriale d’Alqatiba. Le syndicat réclame sa libération ainsi que le respect de ses droits et de la présomption d’innocence. La Fédération internationale des journalistes a également réclamé sa libération immédiate. Un développement particulièrement inquiétant, selon le SNJT, est que Yousfi aurait dû subir une intervention chirurgicale d’urgence pour une appendicite alors qu’il était en garde à vue. La garde à vue de Mohamed Yousfi a été prolongée de 48 heures supplémentaires le 7 septembre 2026. Cette décision a été prise par le juge d’instruction de la brigade des délits économiques et financiers, à l’expiration du délai initial de 48 heures. Le SNJT a condamné le maintien en détention de son membre, malgré son état de santé, et réclame sa libération immédiate.
