Chawki Tabib, former President of the National Bar Association and former President of the INLUCC, began a hunger strike on 11 August 2026 whilst being held at Mornaguia/Belli prison. In particular, he was protesting against the conditions of his detention and the restrictions he claims to be subjected to, as well as what his defence team describes as the failure to respect certain fundamental rights of detainees. His health has been a cause for serious concern: the Council of Former Bar Presidents highlighted, in particular, his rapid weight loss and eye problems, and asked him to end his hunger strike. On 28 August 2026, Chawki Tabib ended his hunger strike after several days, partly in response to calls for him to look after his health.
However, he still has not been released and remains in custody. In May 2026, he was sentenced to 10 years’ imprisonment in a case involving allegations of financial corruption and forgery, a sentence contested by his defence team. The FIDH has also condemned his detention and called for his release, regarding his case as one of arbitrary detention.

Son état de santé suscite de vives inquiétudes : le Conseil des anciens présidents du barreau a souligné, en particulier, sa perte de poids rapide et ses problèmes oculaires, et lui a demandé de mettre fin à sa grève de la faim. Le 28 août 2026, Chawki Tabib a mis fin à sa grève de la faim après plusieurs jours, en partie pour répondre aux appels lui demandant de prendre soin de sa santé.
Cependant, il n’a toujours pas été libéré et reste en détention. En mai 2026, il a été condamné à 10 ans d’emprisonnement dans le cadre d’une affaire portant sur des allégations de corruption financière et de faux, une peine contestée par sa défense. La FIDH a également condamné sa détention et appelé à sa libération, estimant qu’il s’agissait d’une détention arbitraire.
