On 27 June 2026, two men working as casual laborers were allegedly tortured by military personnel in Senehun Town, Kamajei Chiefdom in Moyamba District, after being accused of stealing fertilizers from their employer. According to a video circulating on social media, they were subjected to inhuman and degrading treatment by military personnel who were forcing them to confess to the crime. The men were allegedly beaten, chained to a metal frame, and forced to confess, with uniformed men seen striking them with sticks and other objects as they cried out in pain. The Republic of Sierra Leone Armed Forces (RSLAF) have been quick to condemn the act and affirmed to investigate the incident, with the two men referred for medical treatment.
Right groups and Civil Society Organizations have condemned the actions of the military personnel with considerations for the rule of law, and human rights of both men. The Human Rights Defenders Network Sierra Leone (HRDN-SL) and the Campaign for Human Rights and Development International (CHRDI) are calling for an impartial and independent investigation, and urged authorities to pursue criminal and disciplinary action against any personnel found responsible, while providing appropriate compensation and support to the victims including both medical and psychological support. CHRDI is further calling for the immediate suspension of the implicated personnel pending full investigation. Both organizations believe the action of RSLAF restore public trust for the institution in the face of such violations.
