Criminal complaint against Lebanese political commentator and online content creator

In early June 2026,  a criminal complaint was filed against Lebanese political commentator and online content creator Rawad Nassar following the circulation of a video in which he reportedly appeared to express support for the advance of Israeli military forces toward the Batroun region. According to media reports, Nassar later stated that the remarks were made while he was under the influence of alcohol.

Following the video’s circulation,  the criminal complaint before the Public Prosecutor at the Court of Cassation, accused Nassar of incitement to sectarian strife, offences against national sentiment, dealing with Israel, calling for the occupation of Lebanese territory, and incitement to murder and justification of killing and destruction. According to the complaint, these offences carry penalties ranging up to life imprisonment with hard labour and the death penalty under the Lebanese Penal Code. The complaint also called for investigations into individuals present at the restaurant who allegedly applauded Nassar’s remarks, as well as the restaurant owner, and stated that additional evidence would be submitted to the authorities.

The arrest and the severe criminal charges against a political commentator and online content creator for statements made in a public setting raise concerns about the potential use of criminal and national security laws to restrict freedom of expression.

While states may limit expression on specified legitimate grounds such as national security, international human rights commitments such as the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights require that such restrictions be lawful, necessary and proportionate. The case may affect the ability of content creators, commentators, and others to express controversial political opinions without legal risk.
