Community activist killed raising concerns for civic space in South Africa

On 20 May 2026, prominent community activist and traditional healer Thato Molosankwe was shot and killed at his home in Lomanyaneng Village, in Mahikeng, Northwest Province. According to reports, a group of armed men stormed his house and shot him multiple times before fleeing the scene. His death shocked communities across the province and the country where he was widely respected for his anti-crime activism and community outreach work.

Thato’s older brother, Leviticus Molosankwe, said he had long been aware of the risks associated with his activism and often spoke about his commitment to justice despite threats to his life. He also stated that the attackers did not steal anything from the house, leading the family to believe that the killing was a targeted and premeditated assassination rather than a robbery.

Molosankwe was recognised for advocating against crime, corruption, gender-based violence and child abuse. He worked closely with communities and law enforcement agencies to promote accountability and protect vulnerable groups.

Following the murder, police launched an investigation to hunt down the killers of Thato Molosankwe. CSOs community leaders, activists, and residents condemned the killing and called for a thorough investigation, urging anyone with information to assist authorities in bringing those responsible to justice.
