The Court of Appeal affirmed the Conviction in Lèse-Majesté Case of Human Rights Defender “Get” Sophon Surariddhidhamrong

On 28 May 2026, the Court of Appeal affirmed the conviction of and the three-year prison sentence against Mr. Surariddhidhamrong under Section 112 in relation to his 22 April 2022 speech at the Democracy Monument, in which he allegedly criticized King Rama X and the Queen. Additionally, the Court of Appeal amended his penalty under Section 4 of the Advertisement by Using Sound Amplifiers Control Act B.E. 2493 (1950) from six months imprisonment to a fine of 200 Baht (approx. USD 5.60), citing the imprisonment sentence exceeded the penalty prescribed by law and was therefore unlawful.

Mr. Surariddhidhamrong has been prosecuted in 15 separate cases for exercising his rights to freedom of expression and peaceful assembly. Four of these involve charges of lèse-majesté, for which he has been sentenced to a total of 10 years in prison. As of now, at least 61 individuals have been imprisoned in relation to the exercise of freedom of expression and peaceful assembly, 34 of whom were sentenced under Section 112 (lèse-majesté) of the Criminal Code.
