On 11 May 2026, Hon. Ateny Wek Ateny, the national Minister of Information, Communication, Technology and Postal Services, pledged to strengthen cooperation with journalists and ensured their safety. This remarks, made during dinner with media representatives, signals cautious optimism fo press freedom in a context of persistent intimidation and censorship.
South Sudan’s media environment remains constrained, with journalists facing intimidation, arbitrary arrests, censorship, and shutdowns of media houses/stations. The Minister’s assurances, come in handy after he personally facilitated freeing Micheal Christopher Rial, the AL Watan Newspaper’s Editor in Chief from detention in December 2025. If this latest assurance is implemented, it could enhance protection for journalists, reduce intimidation, and foster a more enabling environment for freedom of expression.
