On 10 May 2026, the Transitional Government of National Unity (R-TGONU) committed to facilitating safe, timely, and unhindered humanitarian access to Akobo (Town in Northern Jonglei State). Authorities assured protection of humanitarian personnel, security of relief supplies, and Guaranteed access routes. Humanitarian partners are operationally ready to scale up interventions, including emergency food assistance, nutrition, health services, and protection programming. Supplies are pre-positioned to expand reach to affected populations.
This development comes amid Integrated food security Phase Classification (IPC) projection showing Akobo at heightened risk of catastrophic food insecurity and acute malnutrition between April-July 2026. Improved access is expected not only to mitigate deterioration in humanitarian conditions especially during rainy seasons but also open up on civic awareness through improved infrastructure in place.
