Enabling Environment Snapshot

Thailand Enabling Environment Snapshot

The respect and protection of fundamental freedoms remains largely unchanged since the submission of the previous Enabling Environment Snapshot. There are some troubling developments looming, however. On 12 December 2025, Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul dissolved Parliament via royal decree. Subsequently, on 8 February 2026, Prime Minister Anutin’s conservative Bhumjaithai (BJT) Party won 193 of 500 seats during the general election. Held concurrently with the election, the constitutional referendum passed with approximately 21.6 million out of 36.8 million votes (58.6%) in favour of replacing the military-drafted 2017 Constitution. On 9 February 2026, one day after the election, the National-Anti Corruption Commission (NACC) unanimously found 44 former Move Forward Party members of Parliament, many of whom are now members of the People’s Party, guilty of serious ethical violations for sponsoring a bill to amend the lèse-majesté law, and resolved to submit the matter to the Supreme Court, where a guilty verdict could result in a lifetime ban from political office for all 44 members of Parliament.
