Police investigations against members of LGBTIQ+ organisation following pre-emptive cancellation of event

Event Summary

In the week of 25 January 2026, the police initiated investigations against nine Executive Committee (EXCO) members of Jejaka, an LGBTQI+ community organisation, following the promotion of a health literacy retreat titled “Glamping with Pride” (GWP). Originally scheduled for 17–18 January 2026 in Hulu Langat, GWP aimed to address HIV stigma and community wellbeing. Following the promotional poster release, at least five police reports were lodged, leading to a probe under Section 504 of the Penal Code and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act.

As of 30 January 2026, two EXCO members have presented themselves at IPD Kajang for questioning. Despite the absence of formal Section 111 notices, members complied due to fears of family harassment or involuntary outing by authorities. Police questioning focused on Jejaka’s legal status (registration under the Registrar of Societies), its mission and member composition, as well as the purpose, targeted participants, and venue of GWP. Seven other EXCO members await questioning due to scheduling conflicts.

This police investigation was preceded by a coordinated campaign of “reckless rhetoric, misinformation and fear-mongering” from federal, state and religious actors. High-level stakeholders, including the Sultan of Selangor, the Minister for Religious Affairs, and the Department of Islamic Development Malaysia (JAKIM), issued statements framing GWP as a “deviant” LGBT agenda that threatened national security, Islamic faith, and public morality. These institutions, alongside the Selangor Islamic Religious Council (MAIS) and the Federal Territories Mufti, argued that the event invited “divine wrath”. Concurrently, local political actors—including the Hulu Langat Member of Parliament and village heads—conducted physical “inspections” of resorts and established surveillance networks to block the organisers from the area. Consequently, the venue owner cancelled the booking on safety grounds, and Jejaka was forced to cancel GWP after receiving “credible and explicit threats, including death threats and references to violent acts” on social media.
