Event Summary
On 17 November 2025, two environmental activists were summoned for interrogation by the Criminal Investigations Department at the Ministry of Justice. The summons resulted from a defamation complaint filed by a private property developer in Amchit. The activists had been campaigning for the enforcement of environmental regulations on a coastal construction site. The activists were questioned for approximately four hours and then only released after they signed a pledge regarding their future interactions with the property owner. This judicial proceeding occurred even though the Ministry of Environment had ordered a suspension of construction works at the site pending an environmental impact assessment. The incident raises concerns about the use of criminal investigation procedures against peaceful advocates.
