Activist Ayman Sanduqa’s felony charge and prison sentence for critical Facebook post upheld by military court

Event Summary

Ayman Sanduqa, a former teacher and secretary-general of the dissolved Rescue and Partnership Party, was arrested in December 2023 after posting a Facebook letter criticizing Jordan’s relations with Israel and calling for the annulment of the Wadi Araba peace treaty.

In February 2024, he was charged before the State Security Court with inciting against the political regime (Article 149) and sentenced to five years in prison in January 2025. Although the Court of Cassation later ruled the post constituted the lesser offense of insulting the king (Article 195), the State Security Court overturned that decision on 15 September 2025, reinstating his felony conviction.

His arrest and sentencing have been widely criticized by Jordanian civil society, with over 300 public figures signing an open letter and protests held in solidarity.
