Activist Ayman Abli detained under 2023 Cybercrime Law, now released

Event Summary

On 24 July 2025, Ayman Abli was detained by the Cybercrime Unit (the entity associated with implementing the 2023 Cybercrime Law) over Instagram content for “publishing content that may incite strife.” He was released on bail 26 July 2025. The case is now under legal consideration at the Amman Magistrate Court.

Abli is a prominent Instagram personality and activist. Very shortly prior to the arrest, Abli had posted on Instagram critiquing people in Jordan who were engaging in public celebrations while the genocide in Gaza has been ongoing — and it should be noted that a public celebration (the annual Jerash Festival for Culture and Arts) was happening at the time of his posts, which viewers understood the posts to be in response to. He also critiqued state and public inaction in Jordan over Gaza.

On 3 August 2025, Abli posted an Instagram story in which he clarified that he voluntarily presented himself to the authorities, and that the arrest was not in regards to his advocacy regarding Gaza. Further details of the case (including over which content) has not been publicly released. However, public perception believes the arrest is in retaliation to his advocacy and critique of people in Jordan.
