On 4 April 2025, the Bangladeshi government reported that the Burmese military junta had agreed to repatriate 180,000 Rohingya refugees living in Bangladesh back to Burma. Bangladeshi officials stated that the 180,000 names were part of a larger list of 800,000 Rohingya individuals that Bangladesh had provided to Burma in six separate submissions from 2018 to 2020. The junta has not given any official responses regarding the repatriation.
The junta had also reportedly notified Bangladesh that an additional 70,000 names were awaiting final verification, as officials continued to examine photographs and identity details. The junta also reportedly pledged to expedite the verification process for the remaining 550,000 individuals on the list.
However, it is unclear why the junta has gone forward with this repatriation plan and what will happen to the Rohingya if they return to Burma.
