Disbandment of renowned local advocacy group Hong Kong Unison

On 28 February 2025, the Hong Kong Unison (融樂會) announced its decision to dissolve after 24 years of advocating for the rights of ethnic minorities. The association held a special members’ meeting where the resolution was passed, with Chairperson Chong Ming-lian stating that the organization had completed its historical mission. The dissolution process will involve the appointment of two liquidators, with assets amounting to approximately HK$4 million being used to cover severance and long-service payments, with the remainder to be donated to similar organizations.

The dissolution removes an advocate for minority rights and democratic values and highlights the difficulty of sustaining civil society activism in an environment that increasingly limits space for public advocacy and dissent.
